Just some more random stuff

I recently got Painkiller running on my PC again. Painkiller is a wonderful first person shooter game, a throwback to the old Quake 1 days. It is also an excellent PC stability test, as it reveals several quirks with your RAM timings which other games and even memory tests would not otherwise reveal.

I've also been playing Titan Quest; and thats a better game than many I've seen in recent days. It is a nice adventure game; but it gets frustrating at times. Graphics are beautiful, environments are well rendered. Ancient Greece at its best :-)

Next thing is about viruses. It seems a lot of computers around my area are getting infected with malware due to outdated Antimalware protection. Since piracy and costs are such a big issue I do not expect people to buy Antivirus software legally, of course its their choice :-). Nearly all USB drives I get from outside my home have some trojans lodged in them.

If you ever suspect you may be having a virus/trojan/worm/whatever, I would recommend trying out the following free tools to try and clean your computer:

Dr.Web CureIT (http://www.freedrweb.com)
ArcaBit ArcaMicroScan (http://www.arcabit.com/download_product.html?product=ArcaMicroScan)
MicroWorld MWAV toolkit (http://www.mwti.net/products/mwav/mwav.asp)

Dr.Web CureIT and MicroWorld MWAV are not autoupdating - i.e. if you want to update it you must re-download the scanner.

ArcaBit ArcaMicroScan and BitDefender Free Edition (http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-Free-Edition.html) are some tools which have an inbuilt updater; which means you can update the program from the user interface itself instead of downloading the latest version like in the case of the previously mentioned 2 products.

Please note that the above products are on-demand scan tools only, they do not have a real-time monitor that is constantly on check for what is happening on your PC. I recommend running weekly scans with the above tools, whichever one you choose.

If you want a totally free Antivirus which includes a real-time system monitor that constantly checks whats happening on your PC, I would recommend any of the following products:

AVG Free edition + Spyware Terminator
Avast Home Edition
Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic + Spyware Terminator

In addition to an Anti-Virus I recommend an Anti-Rootkit scanner. It is absolutely essential because your PC may already be infected and AV solutions currently do not provide adequate protection against already running rootkits.

I recommend the following tools:

F-Secure BlackLight (click to download)
AVG Anti-Rootkit

There are others available but these two are OK and do not confuse the user too much. :-)

Well, thats it for now. Hopefully I have some better news next time......:D

A Few thoughts....

Recently, reading about the crisis of the earth - global warming and its ill effects, pollution, ozone layer depletion etc. has brought a few thoughts to my head. I have seen various corporates trying to make a quick buck in times of crisis and need, by raising their prices when the stock or supply of a needed item is low. I also see the prices of petroleum rise every day.

We have been given a beautiful planet to live. Yet, every day almost entire forests are cut down in the name or urbanization and development. Companies which produce greenhouse gases by the cartloads are adamant in adopting eco friendly operation measures, because this costs money. And when they agree to do this, they raise the prices in order to keep their profit margin high.

In this world, money has become greater than God. I find it shameful that people try to cheat customers, deprive them of their livelihood (when they raise prices during lack of supply) all in the name of profit. It is equally shameful that companies try to keep their profit margins steady at any cost. It is right that they have to pay their employees, but there has to be some compromise if we intend to keep a balance between nature, people and industries.

For example, mostly all of us know the ill effects of global warming. It has already manifested itself badly in places across the world. If, for the sole reason of making money, people keep cutting trees and making new high rise buildings, and also raise prices for the craze of money, it won't be long before global warming reaches such a bad state that people have to migrate to colder areas to live happily. Unfortunately land and space is still limited and the colder areas won't hold everyone. So this means its every one for himself, and all the money in the world cannot save you.

Honestly, when you try and hurt the balance of nature and human and animal lifestyle in the way of money, you cannot expect to go away a happy man. In the long run, this will prove fatal. And supposing you clear a forest for buildings, when an extreme weather conditions happens, all the money in the world will not allow you to prevent the damage that was meant to be.

The incentive of making money should be secondary to the incentive of preserving life; for without life, your money is nothing but monkey's toys. So I would like people and industries to wake up to the appaling reality, and start saving the Earth and its people instead of trying to fill their butts with money.

BitDefender 10 all set to release

BitDefender 10 should release soon. For those who do not know, BitDefender is a lineup of security solutions from a Romanian developer named Softwin.

The new version features several improvements, the main being anti-rootkit technology and an improved firewall (for the Professional and Internet Security editions), plus a behaviour blocker technology named B-HAVE. There is also a rumour that with the release of BitDefender 10, the licensing terms for the Internet Security edition is revised such that one license covers all computers in a household!

For those of you who cannot wait for the official announcement, the final version is already on BitDefender's FTP servers for download. However, keep in mind that currently only the French, German and UK English versions are released.

The only differences between the UK English and the "normal" english versions is a bit of change in the contact info for BitDefender.

All existing users can upgrade to BitDefender 10 by using their current license key. So I am posting the download links to the final UK english versions of BD10:
